Meditations on the Media December 18, 2005

“Looking Back at 2005″ will say many a newspaper/news channel headline! Don’t these newspaper headlines get sick of repeating the same plot every year, just like those million “khiladi” movies of Akshay Kumar. The media is the single most important culprit in global warming I would say, of course after Abey Varghese my MBA batchmate who I suspect is also behind the Big Bang!! So much of futile energy the media generates on issue after issue that I have been yearning for years to watch the Doordarshan news.

Remember the days of sedate news reading thanks to the first off the block “kids” Shammi Narang, Salma Sultan, Rini Simon and their ilk. Even though they delved in detail on the most inconsequential incidents with seriousness (that would shock even Abu Salem’s CBI interrogators), they did a good job of reading out the news without any emotional entanglement. I am talking about a time as primitive as the 1980s when the only tinge of objectivity came in the form of The World This Week, with Prannoy Roy and the late Appan Menon in the vanguard of the show! As an aside I am really astonished to note how far NDTV has come from its days of infancy in the late 1980s. And I realise that its not letting itself fall behind in the race to be the most popular news channel now! Compulsions of growth I guess!
